Celebrating 80 years ...
The Sept. 4, 1970, issue of the Jewish Western Bulletin featured a story on the official launch of ORT in Vancouver. The founding president was “Mrs. Morris Huberman, with vice-presidents Mesdames Jack Lederman, William Maurice, Eugene Marks, Manfred Carsh and Joseph Bensimon.” ORT members from other parts of Canada joined the tea and coffee party held at Huberman’s home, where this photo was taken.
The Rose Elstyne chapter was the new group’s name, and any other chapters joining before Jan. 1, 1971, would “be considered charter members of Vancouver region.”
For 130 years, ORT has “followed the Maimonidean credo, ‘Freed from charity by the skill of their hands,’ ” and Vancouver ORT remains active. Its current fundraiser is a games party, with tables for contract bridge, mah jongg, canasta, etc. The event will include a lunch with homemade pastries, prizes and a fashion show by CRISCA. It will be held at the Richmond Country Club, on Wednesday, Oct. 6. For more information and for reservations, call 604-224-1808 or 604-241-3102.
