Bulletin wins press award

The Ethnic Press Council of Canada Inc. has selected the Jewish Western Bulletin as one of the best ethnic publications in Canada. This year, eight ethnic communities were chosen for analysis and, within each ethnic group, a winner was selected. The papers nominated were judged on how well they promoted the Canadian context (aspects such as brotherhood, anti-racism and equality) to their readership while maintaining the specific community needs of the readership.

The papers examined were chosen by the Ethnic Press Council and by Pluri Vox Media Corp., a company that strives to facilitate inter-cultural communication in support of Canada's multicultural demographic. Pluri Vox offers a range of services, including translation and media monitoring, and it has experience working with print publications published by more than 23 linguistic/cultural groups in Canada. Within the Jewish community, Pluri Vox monitors the Bulletin, the Canadian Jewish News, Manitoba's Jewish Post and News and Quebec's Voix sepharade.

The award given to the Bulletin was for best editorial content and was presented for "Outstanding contributions and dedication in the promotion of the interests of the multicultural communities; the editorials and the expression of the will of the Jewish community in Canada; and for the acceptance and implementation of the principles of equality."

A special ceremony took place Sept. 1 at the National Trade Building in Toronto. The event celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Ethnic Press Council and included the presentation of this year's awards. The Hon. Sheila Copps, minister for Heritage Canada, and the Hon. Jean Augustine, Secretary of State for Multiculturalism, were in attendance. This is the second journalism award received by the Bulletin this year. In June, the paper won first place for excellence in news reporting for Pat Johnson's cover story about a local church raising money to help convicted Nazi war criminal Michael Seifert.
