New year adds choice

Food and relaxation abound in many locations.
KYLE BERGER

As we mark the beginning of the year 5766, here is a round-up of businesses that have recently joined the Vancouver community.

Whether it be a Montreal-style smoked meat sandwich or a bowl of matzah ball soup to cure the working-day blues, Vancouver's downtown working stiffs have already benefited from the new Kaplan's Star Deli.

Located on Alberni Street, the second instalment of Kaplan's Star Deli has flourished by catering to the many office parties, luncheons and meetings that take place in the area. The lunch hours at Kaplan's are also a busy time in-store.

According to store manager Mike Sachs, the new downtown version of Kaplan's features all brand new, state-of-the-art tools and equipment, with the same fresh ingredients featured at the original location, which is at Oak Street and 41st Avenue.

Although downtown Kaplan's doesn't have the same stocked take-home deli options as the original, due to its smaller size, 24-hours notice can get you an order of as much chopped liver or pickled herring as a person could want.

The new Kaplan's Star Deli store hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store is at 1059 Alberni St. and can be reached by calling 604-806-0333.

More Solly's equals more cinnamon buns, which, let's face it, is good for everybody.

Solly's Bagels recently opened its third and largest store at 368 West 7th Ave., just one block east of Cambie Street.

Since its opening in August, Solly's founders and owners Joe and Leah Markovitch have been overwhelmed by the lunch crowd at their new location, just down the street from the new Canadian Tire and Best Buy stores.

Double the size of the other two Solly's locations, the West 7th outlet also features a large production kitchen, used to centralize the baking efforts for all three stores. The production kitchen prepares all the raw dough before sending them to each store, where the goods are baked fresh on site.

The first Solly's location opened on East 28th Street, just west of Main Street, in 1994. The second Solly's is located at 2873 West Broadway.

Although bagels are the name of the game, a visit to Solly's has to include a taste of their famous cinnamon buns. The Solly's menu also includes a variety of Jewish pastries, homemade veggie soups and sandwiches. As well, they offer a wide range of platters for catering needs.

The new Solly's can be reached by calling 604-675-9750.

If you're looking for an easy executive getaway without having to make major travel plans, community member Reesa Devlin invites you to spend some time at the Silver Door bed and breakfast.

Located in the village of Anmore, near Buntzen Lake, the Silver Door is situated on an acre of land that features refreshing mountain views.

"My love of entertaining, cooking, caring for people, in addition to my husband's retirement and my children growing up and moving out, motivated me to pursue a dream," Devlin said of her new business venture. "My extensive culinary background, our contemporary home with all the amenities, the property and serene location make it a perfect venue to get away from it all."

Devlin has also put together a group retreat package for team building or brainstorming sessions that can include a hike around Buntzen Lake and theatre space appropriate for a film or a Power Point presentation.

Awarded a 4.5 star rating from Tourism B.C., the Silver Door also features an outdoor pool, making it a great place for either a romantic getaway or a larger private retreat. Devlin even has plans to offer culinary classes, a concept that feeds off of her own background.

More information on the Silver Door can be found online at www.thesilverdoor.ca or by calling 604-949-1332.

What would you call a single item that's being marketed as its own private beach, a picnic blanket, a duffle bag, a bed or a place to party?

Pravda is an architect and entrepreneur who splits his time between Vancouver and New York City. The Spot is an all-in-one, take-with-you-wherever-you-go luxury item that features a blanket and a messenger bag and can be spread out wide enough to serve as a picnic blanket.
