Letters

Editor: The Burquest Jewish Community Association and Congregation Sha'arei Mizrah would like to thank the representatives of the Greater Vancouver Jewish community who attended the opening and dedication ceremony for our community centre in Coquitlam on Oct. 6. The centre's purpose is to encourage the expression of Jewish life, and provide a focus for Jewish activity for persons living in the eastern suburbs. We invite all members of the broader community to attend events at the centre in the future. We also encourage other organizations to consider ways to use this new facility in support of their own programs and activities.

The event provided an opportunity to recognize persons and organizations whose support made its acquisition and renovation possible, including life donors from the Wosk family and Diamond Foundation. We also acknowledged contributions from those who represent the broader Jewish community, including the Community Foundation of Greater Vancouver and the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver. We appreciate this investment in the future of the Jewish community in our area.

The opening also provided an opportunity to welcome back former members and leaders of the community, including Edwin and Betsy Menkis, Cliff Unger and David and Ellen Freedman, whose efforts provided a foundation for our current success.

Next March, Burquest will conduct a capital fund drive aimed at paying off the mortgage we retain on the centre, thereby reducing our operating costs and providing funds to sustain its operation in the future. We hope that many of you will have the opportunity to visit and enjoy the centre before receiving a letter or telephone call asking for your support. Burquest members have already made this centre their own. We hope that the broader community will find opportunities to do so as well, and thank you all for your good wishes and support.
