Celebrating 80 years ...
Despite the proliferation of classifieds on the Internet, the Classifieds section of the Jewish Independent is still a much-read part of the paper, and a great way to communicate a business or personal message to the entire community. This week in 1954, the Jewish Western Bulletin had several real estate-related advertisements, as well as one very direct personal ad from a 32-year-old man wanting to “meet a nice Jewish girl. Object matrimony.” If he was successful in his objective and is still a reader of the paper, please let us know!
Also being advertised in the May 28, 1954, issue were bungalows in the South Granville area, for “the discriminating buyer” – “for just $19,950.” According to the Bank of Canada’s inflation calculator, that’s $165,300 in 2010 dollars. Hard to believe, considering that a home in that area now would cost at least 10 times as much.
