Celebrating 80 years ...
A column in the Jewish Western Bulletin, Skeletons in the Closet, covered everything from milestones to light gossip. In the May 4, 1951, edition, the paper looked back at 20-plus years of publishing, highlighting four longtime advertisers: “the Hub, Sam Hyman, Union Cleaners and the London Bakery (now known as Mother Hubbard Bakery)!”
It also noted that former Bulletin editor Harold Rome had his bar mitzvah on March 7, 1930, and that Bud Lando was admitted to the bar in Edmonton on July 3, 1930. And, in 1930, the community centre was looking for plants to beautify its grounds and the B’nai B’rith softball team won the Inter-Fraternal Championship by defeating the Knights of Pythias.
Bringing the news up to date, Skeletons pointed out that only two members of the 1930 editorial committee of the Bulletin were still active in the community in 1951 – Sam Rothstein and Albert Koch. Another item read, “In the May 8th edition, 1930, there is a very good cut of Abe Rothstein. We looked at it twice – and do you know what? – he is still using the same cut!”
