Racist and antisemitic graffiti spray-painted on a Richmond elementary school last weekend led to the unintended positive consequence of Jewish and Chinese Canadian community leaders issuing a joint statement reconfirming support for the values that make Canada Canada.
“Such actions have no place in the inclusive and multicultural society of Canada,” said Romy Ritter of Canadian Jewish Congress-Pacific Region. “Attacks motivated by hate create fear not only for members of that particular group but for all individuals belonging to an ethnic and/or religious group. They also seriously undermine the foundation that Canadian society is built upon: diversity, equality and respect.”
The Chinese-Canadian service organization SUCCESS joined CJC in condemning the graffiti. “As an organization dedicated to multicultural harmony, these actions are not only completely incomprehensible, but also entirely unacceptable. They have no place in Richmond, or anywhere else in Canada,” said Thomas Tam of SUCCESS.
Hear, hear.
