Their own city secrets

VERONIKA STEWART

With all the rain that's been dousing the city lately, and umbrellas getting more than the usual wear and tear, spring is definitely something to look forward to. With that in mind, we asked some members in the community to share with us some of the things that they enjoy when the sun comes back out, or even all year round.

Karen Corrin
Librarian, Isaac Waldman Jewish Public Library

What is your favorite place to eat? My son's. He's a great cook.

What is your favorite place to be outdoors? On a dike in Richmond, near the fishing dock, at the end of No. 3 Road. There are beautiful sunsets there.

What is your favorite place to let loose/party? The last [Jewish] Independent party, when they celebrated their name change. I'm waiting for the next one.

What is your favorite place to get a last-minute gift for someone? Anything convenient. I like to go five minutes before closing, so that there's no one there.

What's your best April Fool's gag? Putting eggs in your husband's shoes, or spaghetti in his cigarette pack. I've done both. If he did anything to me though, I'd be really annoyed.

What is your favorite place for a family getaway? Commercial Drive. You can go from coffee shop to coffee shop.

When/where was the longest seder you've ever been to? One of mine, which is why I go somewhere else for them now. I don't do them anymore.

Perry Ehrlich
Director, Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance!

What is your favorite place to eat? At home. My wife is a brilliant cook.

What is your favorite place to be outdoors? I'm a walker. I love to walk all over Vancouver and Richmond, especially West 4th and Granville Street.

What is your favorite place to let loose/party? I let loose when I work with the kids at Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! and I party with friends.

What is your favorite place to get a last-minute gift for someone? Costco. There's a great selection and great prices.

What's your best April Fool's gag? When I was in Grade 4, I had someone put a cast on my hand when it wasn't broken. It was a great joke, but it took forever to get rid of the cast.

What is your favorite place for a family getaway? Disneyland.

When/where was the longest seder you've ever been to? We had an amazing seder at my house years ago with a lot of friends. We sang for four or five hours. It was wonderful.

Roz Hoffer
aka the Granny Rapper

What is your favorite place to eat? Kaplan's Deli [at 41st and Oak] when I'm in the city.

What is your favorite place to be outdoors? By Burrard Inlet. I love Burrard Inlet. It's very beautiful.

What is your favorite place to let loose/party? I'm the Granny Rapper, so I visit schools and sing for kids. I teach them how to like people from other cultures. I like to work in the community, making people happy. That's my favorite thing to do.

What's your best April Fool's gag? I've never done any. I've had them done on me though.

What is your favorite place for a family getaway? Here in Coquitlam, because there are five lakes here you can go to.

When/where was the longest seder you've ever been to? Back in Toronto, where I was born, when I was a child. When we used to attend Orthodox seders.

Pini Kahlon
Owner, Pini's Kosher Deli

What is your favorite place to eat? Sabra restaurant.

What is your favorite place to be outdoors? Grouse Mountain.

What is your favorite place to let loose/party? Ginger 62 Lounge.

What is your favorite place to get a last-minute gift for someone? Future Shop. It's close by.

What's your best April Fool's gag? Someone told me she was pregnant.

What is your favorite place for a family getaway? Israel, but we don't get there too much.

When/where was the longest seder you've ever been to? In San Diego, at a friend's house last year.

Carole Lieberman
Realtor

What is your favorite place to eat? Provence Marinaside.

What is your favorite place to be outdoors? Walking or running on the beach.

What is your favorite place to let loose/party? Any parties I'm invited to. I'm a party girl.

What is your favorite place to get a last-minute gift for someone? Perfect Gift in Kerrisdale.

What's your best April Fool's gag? Turning around the faucet so the sprayer hits you in the face.

What is your favorite place for a family getaway? I'd love to go to a health spa.

When/where was the longest seder you've ever been to? At our friend's house, when we sang our hearts out at the end.

Mark Weintraub
Chair, Canadian Jewish Congress, Pacific Region

What is your favorite place to eat? Grabbing a quick meal before a Canadian Jewish Congress meeting, a piece of pizza at the café at the [Vancouver Jewish Community] Centre.

What is your favorite place to be outdoors?
Without question, Kits Beach.

What is your favorite place to let loose/party? Sneaking into Kits pool after hours and turning on the Parks Board stereo system (which is known to very few people).

What is your favorite place to get a last-minute gift for someone? One of the synagogue gift shops.

What's your best April Fool's gag? Actually, several of my friends were very brutal one year. I was selling my Pathfinder and several friends placed an ad for $10,000 less than the going price. I was bombarded the next day with 100 maniacal callers, all wanting the best deal in the city.

What is your favorite place for a family getaway? It would be hiking Stein Valley if the family was prepared to accompany me.

When/where was the longest seder you've ever been to? When I was 22, in Jerusalem, and accidentally locked myself in the bathroom.
