RDJS students help sick kids
SAM PAWER
In September at Richmond Jewish Day School, our school picked a charity to donate money to: we chose B.C. Children's Hospital.
At Richmond Jewish Day School, we wear a uniform every day except Wednesday. We don't have to wear our uniform on Wednesdays – but only if we donate money. Every Wednesday, kids show up not wearing their uniform, the bell rings and, before classes start, someone from the class will go around the room with a tzedakah bin. Some kids choose to wear their uniform, for participation isn't mandatory, but others don't. If you choose to wear your regular clothes, you have to donate a dollar. We call this Dress Down Day.
On Sunday, June 7, Richmond Jewish Day School participated in a televised telethon, donating a large cheque to the B.C. Children's Hospital for ill children who need our help to fight illnesses of all types. At the telethon, we all wore our uniforms.
At RJDS, we have been doing this type of fundraiser for the past several years, but donating to different charities. This year, I think we raised the most money ever. From every single Wednesday of the school year, the loonies piled up, coming in by the dozens. When they were all counted, RJDS kids had raised $2,200 for B.C. Children's Hospital.
The students and staff at Richmond Jewish Day School trust our donation will go to good use, and we thank B.C. Children's Hospital for letting us donate to their fundraiser.
Sam Pawer is a Grade 6 student at Richmond Jewish Day School. Her brother, Brayden, has benefited from the care at B.C. Children's Hospital.
