Sabra reopens its doors
Renovated restaurant adds Chinese food to the menu.

Over the past few years, there has been constant growth and change
in the eateries that offer kosher food to the Jewish community of
Greater Vancouver. With the opening of Pini's kosher pizza and groceries
and the development of Nava Creative Kosher Cuisine in the Jewish
Community Centre, locals were discovering a lot more options for
their kosher palates.
Simon Kahlon wasn't about to let that momentum stop.
Kahlon, the owner of Sabra Glatt Kosher restaurant and bakery on
Oak Street, which now has the word "international" added
to its storefront signage, just celebrated the store's grand reopening.
The renovated restaurant and bakery looks nothing like its old self.
There's a larger, completely refurnished restaurant and a snazzier,
more modern-looking food counter.
However, the changes that Kahlon is most excited about are the additions
to his menu - particularly the Chinese food.
"People where asking me why they had to go to Seattle to have
kosher Chinese food," he said of his reasons to adjust the
menu, "so I decided to do it here - to keep the Jewish people
eating Chinese food in Vancouver.
"And in Seattle the Chinese food is vegetarian," he added.
"We have meat."
Kahlon added a few other items to the restaurant, including a shwarma
machine, while keeping all his original menu items available as
well.
"Any food you want, we'll make it," he said.
The restaurant, which used to seat 35 people, can now handle approximately
60 diners at once.
The changes have been well- accepted by regulars of Sabra.
"It looks much bigger," said Isaac Wang. "It looks
like you could accommodate a bar mitzvah in here."
"I've been coming here for the past few years," added
Chava Wang. "The kids love it here and it is amazing how they
can cater to the Jewish community."
The Sabra grand reopening took place June 15 and featured complimentary
food sampling and drinks.
