The joy of singing out

Bagel Club choir members love getting together.
JULIE HUBER

We have had three sessions of the Bagel Club choir and it has been a lot of fun. We meet in the Adult Lounge of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver on the last Sunday of the month.

So far, we have 12 members: Toby Wertman, Rheta Ogilvie, Steven Cynader, Mark Estrin, Trevor Minster, David Benbaruj, Evan Lipsky, Jori Fisher, Sarah Lipetz, Ethan Lipsky, Brenda Curtis and me, Julie Huber.

Music therapist Annette Wertman Altman is our director. She has made songbooks that we use to learn the words to Yiddish and Hebrew songs. She is planning a sing-along with the residents of the Louis Brier Home and Hospital on Sunday, Aug. 26, so we have lots of rehearsing to do!

Annette also brings a few instruments to accompany our singing. Toby is very good on the tambourine, Rheta shakes a maracca and David leads the choir. Anat is the co-ordinator of the Bagel Club, and sometimes she brings her children to the session, so they can participate and enjoy our singing.

I am the secretary. My role as a secretary is checking the attendance of each person in the choir. It is a pleasure being in a new choir and meeting new people. Annette is so much fun and she works really hard to co-ordinate the choir. Also, it has been a pleasure for me to meet Anat this year. She has a great sense of humor.

Singing in the choir is so much fun and it takes a lot of skill and courage to perform in front of a group of people.
