Celebrating 80 years ...
In this week’s Community Calendar, there are dozens of events listed. While the amount of activity has increased manifold over the years, dances, speakers, meetings and performances have always been a vital part of our community.
If you were looking for something fun to do back in 1932, the Little Production Society, under the sponsorship of the Vancouver section of Council of Jewish Women, had the perfect show: Varieties, a revue to be presented at the Peter Pan Ballroom, 1636 West Broadway, on Jan. 26.
“Under the direction of Miss Shirley Lipovsky, dancing instructress, nine clever chorines are busy practising tricky steps that will delight the beholders, to say nothing of the smart costumes that are being prepared,” read the Jan. 22 article on the cover of the Jewish Western Bulletin.
The advertisement in the same issue noted that the program – two one-act plays and a musical review – would start at 8:30 p.m. “sharp.” The dancing was to commence at 10:30 p.m. “sharp,” with music by Len Chamberlain’s Orchestra. Admission for the evening was 75 cents.
