Finance class just for women
Lynne Zlotnik's investment club has developed into a unique workshop.
KYLE BERGER REPORTER
Five years ago, Lynne Zlotnik was alarmed to discover a study that
suggested that only one in every eight women felt comfortable handling
their personal or family finances. Zlotnik, a financial planner
with Zlotnik, Lamb and Company, decided that she was going to do
her best to change that statistic and has since become a pioneer
in helping women become familiar with their financial well-being.
"Women have so many roles to play and they just go on automatic
pilot," she said. "They worry about their husbands, their
children, their friends or their aging parents and very often they
don't think about themselves and their own security."
So, Zlotnik established the Greater Vancouver Women's Investment
Club, which now boasts more than 80 members in five chapters throughout
the Lower Mainland. Each chapter meets once a month at a different
member's home. Though Zlotnik is not able to attend each meeting
herself, she has trained group leaders who lead the meetings.
One example of a club activity is what Zlotnik called a stock-picking
contest where each chapter did research on a stock of their choice.
"Next October we're going to see which chapter was most successful
at picking a stock that was going to come ahead," she said.
Zlotnik explained that the success of the club has mushroomed into
the recent development of a new course she offers for private clients
called Creating a Roadmap for Women. The course deals with the many
financial issues women may face throughout their lifetime.
"We go through the teen years, single life, married life, family,
divorce or separation, pre-retirement and retirement estate planning,"
she said. "We would deal with all the things that women have
to be aware of during those stages of their lives."
