Why love makes us crazy
Local director's newest project makes the heart laugh.
KYLE BERGER REPORTER
A guy goes to a psychiatrist and says, "Doc, my wife is crazy.
She thinks she's a chicken." The doctor responds, "Well
why don't you turn her in?" So the guy says, "I would,
but I need the eggs."
That joke pretty much sums up the idea behind the musical comedy
I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, which is playing
until March 2 at the Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver.
Directed by the Vancouver Jewish community's own Michael Scholar
Jr., I Love You is made up of 27 short musical skits that
take the audience on a humorously exaggerated adventure through
the different stages of love and relationships.
Starting with the moments that lead up to the stressful first date
and following through with marriage, children and old age, the show
attempts to explain how love makes people crazy, while emphasizing
the battles that take place inside the heads of each partner.
With very few props and a stage plan that allowed for quick scene
changes, I Love You left the audience with only 15 minutes
in the intermission to rest their bellies from laughing.
The four stars of I Love You, Scott Walters, Tracey Powers,
Timothy E. Brummund and Cailin Stadnyk, performed with the passion
that dominated the many different characters they played while showing
off well-executed timing for a challenging musical comedy.
Primarily an actor, Scholar, who earned his bachelor of fine arts
at the University of Alberta, has taken on directing as a new theatrical
challenge. He and Powers formed BareStage Productions to provide
a venue for emerging artists to showcase their talents.
Scholar was nominated for a Gemini Award for his work with the CBC
series Street Cents and toured New York City as the star
of the world English premiere of The Black Rider, a rock
opera that recently won the Sterling Award for best fringe production.
The theme of I Love You could also be summed up with one
of the final skits' closing lines, "Find someone that you love.
Then spend the rest of your life trying to change them."
Tickets for I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change can be
purchased at the Presentation House Theatre or by calling 604-990-3474.
They are $16 for adults and $12 for students.
