Finding something for everyone
Check out the Jewish Independent's second round-up of Chanukah
gift-giving options.
KYLE BERGER
In last week's issue of the Independent we only scratched the surface
the tip of the iceberg in the ocean of opportunity to shop
for the perfect Chanukah gift in Greater Vancouver. This week we
take a closer look at other ideas, including art, pizza and a night
at the theatre.
If you're looking for Chanukah or other Jewish holiday art
or unique works of photography, or if you'd like to give someone
a portraiture session as a gift, visit www.orchiddesigns.net.
It's the creative website of local photographer and painter Baila
Lazarus, on which she sells prints of her watercolors and her collection
of scenic and abstract photography from around the world. She also
does unique photographic works, such as portraits of pregnant women.
Her photos have been exhibited at the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery
at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver. She can be
reached at [email protected]
or 604-873-2530.
The Beth Tikvah Synagogue gift shop, operated by the
synagogue's sisterhood, has a large selection of menorot and other
special items for Chanukah or any other occasion. This includes
a wide selection of gifts for children: games, stickers, Chanukah
decorations and a number of unique dreidels. Beth Tikvah is at 9711
Geal Rd. in Richmond, and the gift shop is open Monday to Friday
from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. For more details, call 604-271-6262.
On anyone's list of people to shop for, there's always someone
who considers themselves to be a movie buff. For them, you may simply
purchase a gift certificate to Festival Cinemas, which includes
Fifth Avenue Cinemas, the Park Theatre and the Ridge Theatre. Committed
to showing films that are out of the mainstream, Festival cinemas
provide a cozy place for a quiet Chanukah evening. Visit www.festivalcinemas.ca
for more information.
At the Perfect Gift, you can find many different chanukiyot,
coffee mugs and other festive items. For the young or young at heart
on your list, the Perfect Gift has a selection of children's books,
Chanukah bears and an assortment of dreidels. Located at 5687 Balsam
St., the Perfect Gift can be reached at 604-261-1501.
Myra Samet also maintains a personal touch at Yoffi Creations.
She makes decorative platters and plates with both Jewish and non-Jewish
themes including several marked with Chanukah symbols. She
also makes personalized photo albums for b'nai mitzvah, weddings
and other special events. Her work can be purchased by calling 604-737-9940.
You might have thought that you'd only go to Pini's Pizza
and Grocery when you needed food supplies or a freshly made
kosher pizza pie. But now you can also pick up the perfect Chanukah
gift, from toys to menorot, while you're waiting for the crust to
rise. Pini's is at 729 West 16th Ave. and can be reached at 604-879-7100.
At Pacific Judaica, Marnie Greenwald has the perfect
gift for the customer who just can't find that "special something"
somewhere else. She carries "modern and funky Judaica"
for many holidays, including Chanukah. She has a wide selection
of menorot, latke platters, knife spreaders and Kiddush cups, as
well as items for many other Jewish occasions. View her website
at www.pacificjudaica.com
to see some of the many items available. Pacific Judaica can be
reached at 604-737-1854 or by e-mail at [email protected].
