Royal medals for service
KYLE BERGER REPORTER
Three members of the Vancouver Jewish community were among several
Canadians honored recently with Queen's Golden Jubilee Medals for
their service to the community. Presented by the Hon. Hedy Fry,
member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre, one of the medals was
awarded to Jewish community member Alan Herbert, a former councillor
for the City of Vancouver, at the Coal Harbour Community Centre
Nov. 29.
At the ceremony, another nine Canadians who had been awarded the
Order of Canada this summer, were honored with a pendant that recognized
that they were given the Order of Canada in the Queen's Golden Jubilee
year. Included in that group was local Jewish community member Miriam
Winston, who spent 20 years volunteering for the Crohn's and Colitis
Foundation of Canada, among other organizations. She raised more
than $7 million for digestive disease research and served as the
foundation's national president.
In addition, Ralph Jackson, post commander of the Jewish War Veterans
of Canada, received the Queen's medal at a local ceremony Dec. 9.
