Community Day of Unity

ILAN SARAGOSTI SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN

In this time of insecurity for the Jewish people – crises in Israel, anti-Semitic incidents around the world – it crucial that Jews remain united, regardless of differences in religious or political views. The Second Annual Day of Unity is a day of fun and sun that erases all the lines that separate us in everyday life and celebrates the fact that we have one fundamental thing in common: We are Jewish.

Last year's Day of Unity was a huge success, as more than 1,000 people showed up, representing 28 community groups and a wide spectrum of the Jewish population, to revel in the beauty of Prospect Point in Stanley Park.

Expect more of the same joyous atmosphere this year as young and old, from Orthodox to secular, come together for a kosher barbecue, live music and plenty of activities for kids and adults' – games, face-painting, a clown train, pony rides, jugglers, clowns, arts and crafts workshops and a puppet show. All activities are free and the barbecue and drinks cost a minimal amount. You can also enjoy complementary cotton candy and popcorn and enter the raffle.

The event takes place Sunday, Sept. 2, at the picnic area of Prospect Point in Stanley Park, from noon to 4 p.m. There will be one free shuttle leaving the parking lot at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC), going to the event at 11:15 a.m and returning to the JCC at 4 p.m.

Day of Unity is organized by the Ohel Ya'akov Community Kollel of Greater Vancouver and is sponsored by Zev and Elaine Shafran and family, and Anita Shafran and family, in loving memory of Dave and Lil Shafran.

Ilan Saragosti is a freelance writer and filmmaker living in Vancouver.
