Stories about friendship

The Jewish Bulletin recently gave away double passes for the movie Stolen Summer, produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Chris Moore. If you were 18 or under, we wanted to hear your story about friendship. The three winning contest submissions are:

What does friendship mean to me?
Margaux Wosk (age 13)

Friendship means a lot to me.

Friendship to me is receiving a call when it's not expected. Friendship to me is logging on to the Internet and receiving an instant message. Friendship to me is coming home and finding a letter from a penpal. Friendship to me is accepting everyone.

In all of those, friendship can be a short- or long-distance relationship. They are people who care about me and whom I care for as well.
Friendship is life.

The meaning of friendship
Yolanna Zlotnik (age 9)

Dear Amissa:
I hated you.
We were from different
worlds.
You were just
not my type.
You said the silliest things.
In class, you read too slow,
you listened to weird music
and talked in something that sounded
like gibberish,
which you called a language.

Dear Yori:
I hated you
We were from different
worlds.
You were just
not my type.
You made fun of my English,
you always painted with the ugliest colors,
you listened to boring songs,
wore dirty runners
and you were too
popular.

But Amissa,
I was wrong.
You were the one
who told me I could draw -
if I tried and
You were the only one that
kept my secret.

But Yori,
I was wrong.
You were the one
who said I could write a poem -
if I tried and
You were the one who
told me to switch the
"e" and "i" in the word ... friendship.

Friendship means a lot
Yoni Ragetli (age 12)

Friendship means a lot to me. It means a bond between two people, a strong hold kind of like the one you have with your parents. It means two people helping each other when they most need it. Some friends come and go but some stay and those are the ones that you need to work on. They also provide you with someone to talk to and communicate with. Friendship is what stabilizes our lives. Like everyone, you need it. That is what friendship means to me.
