Goodbye and good luck

Bulletin staff members move on to “bluer waters” and a change of pace.
CYNTHIA RAMSAY SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN

If you call the Bulletin next week, one familiar voice will no longer greet you. If you’re reading the Bulletin, you may notice that one familiar name appears less often than it once did. Two members of the Bulletin staff are moving on to new and exciting opportunities.

Louise Houta, the Bulletin’s office manager, has been with the paper for 12 years. In January of this year, she began to look into the possibility of a career change. Scuba diving caught her interest and now Houta and her partner, Martin Wright, are the Western Canada sales representatives for Nadel Enterprises, which is a supplier for Scuba Pro.

“I’ll be very sad to go,” said Houta, who took her first scuba diving lesson in February.

“I’ll miss everybody, all of the staff. But I am looking forward to change.”

Though her work will take her away from the Bulletin, Houta said she will keep in touch. She will also be keeping up her volunteer work in the Jewish community, such as her involvement with the Chevra Kadisha.

Pat Johnson, co-owner and reporter at the Bulletin, is also making a career change, but one not quite as drastic as Houta’s.

“Being an owner of the Bulletin has been a great adventure but I want to devote myself more completely to writing, including, I hope, a book that someone will actually publish,” said Johnson, “Given the changing political situation in British Columbia, I also want to become more involved in social activism.”

While Johnson will no longer be working from the Bulletin’s East 2nd Avenue office, he will continue writing for the paper as a freelance journalist.

“I hope to continue writing for the Bulletin and to remain active in the community,” said Johnson. “During my years at the Bulletin, I have met so many exceptional people who have made me feel enormously welcome in the community.... Being a part of the Bulletin was and continues to be a source of great pride for me.”

Anyone wanting to get in touch with Johnson can call the Bulletin office at 604-689-1520 and leave a message. Anyone interested in purchasing scuba diving equipment can call Houta and Wright at 604-812-9857 or 1-800-457-0002.
