Teen violence a growing issue

Letters

Editor: The recent rash of teen violence has many people in Vancouver worried. What is becoming of the generation that is soon to be leading our community? As a Jewish teenager and a student at Magee high school, I am very aware of and often witness these occurrences and have noticed they are becoming increasingly common.

Recently, our school had guest speaker Katie Hutchinson tell us the brutal story of her husband's death in Squamish, B.C. There was a party at his neighbor's house that was getting out of hand. All he tried to do was break it up and it cost him his life.

Stories such as these are all too familiar in our city and I think that this is a problem that needs to be addressed immediately. The people who commit these crimes must be subject to harsher punishments because, at the moment, our justice system is being far too lenient on these criminals. If the courts and police do not act now, who will?
