Celebrating 80 years ...JWB_1988 Ebco chanukiyah

The headline of the Dec. 1, 1988, article in the Jewish Western Bulletin is “Unusual Ebco philosophy led to gift of chanukiyah.”

“Ebco Industries, a mammoth high-tech manufacturing consortium led by German Canadian twin brothers, manufactured and donated the chanukiyah with the full support of Rabbi Avraham Feigelstock,” the article states.

“Ebco directors Helmut and Hugo Eppich first made contact with Rabbi Feigelstock a year ago, as part of their company’s working philosophy to transcend the differences among Ebco’s 800 employees,” it continues.

The 25-foot chanukiyah, designed by well-known architect Arthur Erickson and given as a gift to Eitz Chaim Congregation, is described as “certainly the biggest Jewish artifact in Richmond and the largest chanukiyah in Canada.” The article goes on to say that Ebco also “helped restore the Nine O’Clock Gun, manufactured Chung Hung’s Spring at Robson Square and built the surreal, all-white Highway ’86 sculpture at Expo.”

The chanukiyah is currently in storage.
