Did we miss anything?

Editorial

It wasn't exactly the most gripping television ever. The federal leaders' debate last Friday night – live from Vancouver – did not offer the history-altering one-liners that have turned the course of elections in the past. But for a country tired of petty politics and snarky politicians, this debate was remarkably focused on issues and policy, offering voters a fairly clear statement of principles from the four participants.

Of course, observant Jews had to wait for the endless reruns – thanks to cable television, the two debates have been running on a seemingly endless loop ever since – because the debate was scheduled on a Friday night.

It could be said that it was culturally insensitive to hold the debate on Shabbat - though it could be also said that it is culturally insensitive to have this election campaign during the Christmas season, too.

There may be the odd Canadian Jew who found it disconcerting to miss the debate's cut and thrust live. If it's any consolation, as you've probably gathered in the weeklong regurgitation of the less dull portions of the event, you didn't miss a whole lot. Shabbat shalom.
