Dancing beyond sound

Jordan Zwicker to bring his Toronto party out west.
KYLE BERGER REPORTER

They're not from around here but they've been seen more and more around the Jewish community of Greater Vancouver. They've been popping up at b'nai mitzvah parties, weddings and other community shindigs.

More and more local parents and party planners have chosen to bring in DJs from Toronto because they're known for a style of entertaining that keeps the party hopping.

In Toronto, gone are the days when all a DJ needed was a box of CDs, a couple of large speakers and a lovely assistant named Red Rosie to hand out prizes for the occasional spot dance. Parties today demand what are referred to as full-service DJs, which often include the DJ, an emcee whose primary goal is to keep the crowd on the dance floor, a set of trained dancing assistants and a handful of other tricks and treats to help keep the party peaking all night long.

As of March 2003, Vancouverites won't have to make plane reservations to get that Toronto-style of DJ services. Jordan Zwicker, owner of the Toronto-based Beyond Sound Entertainment, has decided to expand his company and set up shop in Vancouver.

"I had heard that there was a need for interactive entertainment in Vancouver from people who had been to parties there and said there is nothing compared to what Toronto has to offer," said Zwicker, who added that Vancouverites have been hiring Toronto-based DJs, which was especially expensive once airfare and hotel costs were factored in.

"Vancouver is the third biggest city in Canada and they should have the opportunity to have that on a regular basis without having that expense," he said.

Zwicker said that he and partner Ryan Freedman designed Beyond Sound to be a one-stop shop for party planning. Depending on the client's needs, they include unlimited free consultations during the party planning stages, dancers, prizes, lighting and, of course, the latest music for all ages. They even have casino equipment and other specialized games available.

"From the moment [the guests] walk into the party, it's very interactive," Zwicker said. "We basicly put on a show for the guests and make the bar or bat mitzvah child and the family the spectacle of the evening.

"And when you walk out, more than anything else, you feel like you had a good time and everyone got involved, whether they were two years old or bubbes and zaydes."

Beyond Sound already left its mark in Vancouver when they worked a teen party at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver this fall. With more than 700 kids attending, Zwicker said their first taste of the Vancouver market was sweet.
"We got a lot of e-mails from people saying it was an awesome party and wanting to know when we were coming back."

Zwicker said they are specificaly committed to the Jewish community, and noted that they also have what he called the Mitzvah Program, which sees a portion of their profits donated to the guest of honor's favorite charity. They already have commitments for seven events in Vancouver in the spring.
